In a recent event held in the picturesque city of Udaipur, Rajasthan, automotive enthusiasts were treated to a spectacular display of vintage and classic cars. Among the stunning array of vehicles, one gem stood out—the 1937 Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet B. This iconic automobile not only captured attention for its remarkable history but also the age-old tradition of its esteemed owner, Late Pranlal Bhogilal, to showcase his cars in a separate section, allowing enthusiasts to admire them for their academic and personal interests.

Originally introduced at the prestigious 1936 Paris Motor Show, the Mercedes Benz 540K Cabriolet B quickly gained fame as one of the swiftest and most luxurious cars of its time. Boasting a formidable 5401cc engine with 8 straight-line cylinders and a supercharger, it boasted an impressive power output of 180bhp, propelling it to speeds of up to 170 km/h with ease. Despite its illustrious past, the car faced challenges over the years, including an engine upgrade and gearbox issues.

The journey of the 540K took an intriguing turn when it came into the possession of Yashwantrao Martandrao Mukne, Maharaja Of Jawhar, in 1938. However, it wasn’t until 1976 that it found its way into the hands of the Late Pranlal Bhogilal, who was determined to add it to his prestigious car collection. Despite undergoing an engine upgrade to a more fuel-efficient diesel unit from Perkins, the car’s original engine was rediscovered and reinstalled after it was retrieved from the depths of Sterling Apartment’s basement. However, the gearbox had suffered significant wear and tear, leading to unresolved issues that resulted in the car being stored away in a garage, hidden from prying eyes, for over four decades.

The late Pranlal Bhogilal, a revered car collector in India, was born with an innate passion for art, artifacts, jewelry, and vintage cars from the royal families of India. His collection, which began in his teenage years, burgeoned into a vast treasure trove by the mid-1970s, with a particular emphasis on vintage vehicles of historical significance. Tragically, Pranlal Bhogilal passed away in 2011, leaving behind a rich legacy and an extensive collection that awaited restoration.

Stepping into his father-in-law’s footsteps, Brijesh Chinai and his wife Chamundeshwari Bhogilal Chinai took on the task of rejuvenating the cherished collection. Among the standout pieces was the Mercedes Benz 540K, which underwent meticulous restoration under their guidance. As they painstakingly worked on each vehicle, a sense of pride, happiness, and nostalgia enveloped them. Each car told a story of an era long past, a testament to their late father’s passion for preserving craftsmanship and beauty.

Their journey to rejuvenate the collection wasn’t merely a mechanical feat; it was a heartfelt endeavor to honor their father’s legacy and preserve India’s rich automotive heritage. With each restored car, they breathed new life into their father’s cherished collection, ensuring that his love for vintage cars continued to inspire future generations.

Through their dedication and passion, Brijesh Chinai and Chamundeshwari Bhogilal Chinai not only enriched their lives but also paid homage to their late father’s commitment to preserving India’s cultural heritage. As they continue on this remarkable journey, they hope to keep their father’s memory alive and share the stories and sentiments behind each vintage car with the world.
